Okpekpe Road Race Appoints Oshiomhole and Ahmed as Ambassadors for 2026 Event
With just 30 days remaining until the highly anticipated World Athletics Gold Label Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, the organizers have made a significant announcement. Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole and Yasser Ahmed have been appointed as ambassadors for the event, a move that underscores the race's expanding global stature and prestige.
Strategic Appointments Reflect Event's Credibility
Pamodzi Sports Marketing, the promoter and organizer of the race, revealed that these appointments are a direct reflection of the men's substantial contributions to the credibility and success of the competition. Over the years, the Okpekpe race has evolved into one of Africa's premier road races, attracting top athletes and international attention.
Mike Itemuagbor, CEO of Pamodzi Sports Marketing and the race promoter, provided insight into the selection process. "Ambassadors are chosen not just for their public stature but for their direct impact on the growth, sustainability, and international recognition of the Okpekpe race," he explained. "Senator Oshiomhole and the CEO of Premier Sports Timing, Mr Ahmed, embody these qualities, one through infrastructural vision, the other through technical excellence."
Contributions of the Ambassadors
Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State and currently serving as a senator, is widely credited with enabling the race's inception. His visionary leadership led to the construction of the road that gave birth to the event in 2013, providing the essential infrastructure that made the competition possible.
On the other hand, Yasser Ahmed has been instrumental in ensuring the race's technical integrity. Since its inception, he has overseen precision timing through his role at Premier Sports Timing, guaranteeing fairness and facilitating international recognition of performances. His expertise has been crucial in maintaining the event's high standards.
Global Significance of the Okpekpe Race
The Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, scheduled for May 23 in Okpekpe town, Edo State, holds a distinguished position in the world of athletics. It is one of only 40 gold label road races approved by World Athletics for 2026, and notably, one of just three on the entire African continent. This elite status highlights its importance in the global sporting calendar.
Furthermore, the race boasts the distinction of being the first in West Africa to earn Label status from World Athletics, a testament to its quality and organization. This achievement has positioned it as a benchmark for other events in the region.
Record Holders and Competitive Legacy
The event has seen remarkable performances over the years. Kenya's Daniel Simiu Ebenyo holds the men's course record with an impressive time of 28:28, showcasing the high level of competition. In the women's category, Kenya-born Kazakhstani Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui set the record in 2023 with a time of 32:38, further cementing the race's reputation for attracting world-class athletes.
As the countdown to the 2026 edition begins, the appointment of Oshiomhole and Ahmed as ambassadors signals a continued commitment to excellence. Their roles are expected to enhance the event's profile, drawing more participants and spectators, and solidifying its status as a cornerstone of African athletics.
