Victor Osimhen Speaks on the Debate Between Lamine Yamal and Michael Olise
Victor Osimhen has shared his thoughts on the ongoing debate regarding who is the better player between Lamine Yamal and Michael Olise this season. Both players have established themselves as among the best right-wingers globally, dominating headlines throughout the campaign.
Yamal is widely regarded as one of the world's top talents, having broken into Barcelona's first team at the age of 15 under coach Xavi Hernandez. Olise, on the other hand, caught the attention of scouts during his time at Reading FC, maintained his momentum at Crystal Palace, and subsequently joined Bayern Munich. The two have consistently dazzled in La Liga, the Bundesliga, and the UEFA Champions League this season.
Osimhen's Perspective on the Yamal vs Olise Debate
Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen was asked to weigh in on the debate but gave a diplomatic response. He stated, "That's a tough one. Permit me to pick both. These guys are unique in their own craft. I think they're almost similar because they use the same foot. The way they read the game is different, so picking one is doing a huge disservice to the other. I'll go for both."
Osimhen compared the debate to the legendary Lionel Messi versus Cristiano Ronaldo discussion, admitting he never chose one over the other. He added, "It's the same thing with Messi and Ronaldo. I go for both. I've never chosen any of them individually. Those two guys have been up there for almost 20 years. Some people compare, but for me, I love both, and I have to thank them for what they've done for football."
Statistical Comparison of Olise and Yamal
Yamal finished second in the Ballon d'Or rankings in 2025, behind Ousmane Dembele, and is again in the conversation alongside Olise. Before suffering a season-ending injury, Yamal recorded 24 goals and 18 assists in 45 matches across all competitions for Barcelona, helping them close in on the La Liga title. However, Barcelona were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League in the quarter-finals by Atletico Madrid.
Michael Olise has contributed 20 goals and 29 assists in 49 matches across all competitions this season. According to Sofascore, he is the only player in Europe's top five leagues with more than 20 goals and assists this season. Bayern Munich remain in contention for the UEFA Champions League despite losing the semi-final first leg to Paris Saint-Germain.
Both players are expected to feature prominently at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, representing Spain and France respectively.
Why Olise Rejected Nigeria
Legit.ng previously reported that Michael Olise could have been Victor Osimhen's international teammate, but he declined the opportunity. Former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr confirmed that he and his assistant Tunde Adelakun scouted Olise in 2021 during his time at Reading, but the player had already decided to represent a European country.
