After weeks of intensive preparation, Nigerian athletes are set to begin their quest for honors at the 2026 World Athletics Relays, which commence tomorrow in Gaborone, Botswana. The two-day event runs from May 2 to May 3.
Some members of the Team Nigeria squad departed for Gaborone on Monday, with five additional athletes joining them in the early hours of Tuesday. On Tuesday, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olapade, arrived in the city to provide support and encouragement to the athletes.
A total of 24 athletes will represent Nigeria across all six relay events at the competition. This year's World Relays serve as a qualification pathway for the 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest and the World Athletics Championships in Beijing 2027.
Among the Nigerian athletes already in Botswana is top sprinter Favour Ashe. A source within the team's camp revealed that Ashe, who had considered switching allegiance to Qatar, changed his mind following appeals from senior Nigerian sports officials, including NSC officials and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).
“Yes, Ashe is here, and he is ready for the World Relay,” the source stated.
Meanwhile, NSC Director General Olapade assured the athletes of the Commission's full backing and the support of Nigerians both at home and abroad. Speaking before his departure for Botswana, Olapade emphasized the importance of discipline, unity, and determination, noting that the World Relays provide a crucial platform for Nigeria to reinforce its pedigree in international athletics.
“The entire nation stands firmly behind you,” he assured the athletes. “We have absolute faith in your ability to deliver and make Nigeria proud.”
Olapade further disclosed that his physical presence in Gaborone to support the team reflects the Federal Government's commitment to the success of Nigerian sports. He encouraged the athletes to aim not only for podium finishes but also to secure qualification spots for upcoming global championships.
