World Athletics, CAA Tap Nigeria's Nesiama for Ghana Mentoring

World Athletics and the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) have invited former Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (rtd), to participate in the Mentoring Programme for Referees at the upcoming African Championships in Accra, Ghana.

Nesiama, whose tenure as AFN Technical Director led to the discovery of athletes such as Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, and Divine Oduduru, recently returned from the World Relays in Botswana, where he served as a referee. The initiative in Accra aims to support the development of Technical Officials through a combination of practical experience, education sessions, and on-site mentoring during a major continental competition.

A letter sent to Nesiama, signed by the Development Senior Manager International Relations & Development Department, Stephane Merlino, stated: "We are pleased to inform you that World Athletics will cover your international flight ticket, and CAA will cover your accommodation for the duration of your stay, from 10 May to 19 May 2026."

The letter continued: "In addition, World Athletics will appoint a Gold Referee with extensive expertise in competition organisation, who will be present to support, advise, and mentor participants, particularly in competition preparation and delivery. Your participation will include: Active involvement in the African Championships, attendance at dedicated mentoring and education sessions, and opportunities to exchange with experienced officials and peers."

This mentoring programme underscores World Athletics and CAA's commitment to enhancing the quality of officiating in African athletics. Nesiama's vast experience, both as a technical director and a referee, makes him an ideal candidate to guide and develop the next generation of referees on the continent.
