NBBF Lines Up Friendlies for D'Tigress in U.S. Camp

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has scheduled friendly matches for the national women's basketball team, D'Tigress, against elite teams from the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) as part of preparations for the 2026 FIBA World Cup. The games are a key component of the team's training tour in the United States, aimed at sharpening their skills ahead of the global tournament slated for Berlin, Germany, later this year.

Tour Details and Opponents

According to the NBBF, the tour will see D'Tigress face top-tier competition across three major U.S. cities. The schedule begins on Saturday against the Los Angeles Sparks in San Diego, followed by a matchup with the Minnesota Lynx on April 27 in Kansas City, and concludes on May 2 against the Indiana Fever in Indianapolis. These fixtures are designed to provide Nigeria with a unique opportunity to test themselves against some of the most accomplished players and systems in world basketball.

NBBF President's Vision

NBBF President Musa Kida emphasized the strategic importance of the tour, stating that it reflects a deliberate vision to cultivate Nigerian basketball talent globally and unify it within a high-performance national team ecosystem. He noted that Nigeria's strength lies in its global footprint and that D'Tigress embodies a blend of experience, athleticism, and competitiveness drawn from top leagues worldwide. Kida added that the objective is to assemble a team capable of competing with and defeating the best, with the World Cup as the ultimate goal.

Coach's Perspective

Head Coach Rena Wakama highlighted the critical nature of such opportunities for the team's growth. She said that competing against top WNBA talent challenges the team physically, mentally, and tactically, allowing them to refine their identity and build cohesion. Wakama stressed that the team is not just preparing to participate but to make a statement on the world stage.

Brand Building and Global Alignment

Ugo Udezue, Chairman of the NBBF Sponsorship and Marketing Committee, emphasized the broader vision behind the tour. He noted that beyond competition, the NBBF is intentionally building D'Tigress into a global sports brand that connects performance with culture, commerce, and community. Through curated activations in key U.S. markets and engagement with the diaspora, the federation aims to expand the team's reach and value. Udezue also highlighted the role of partners like Flutterwave in bridging continents digitally and creating seamless connections with fans.
