Balotelli Declares Support for Ghana
Former Italy international Mario Balotelli has revealed his backing for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following Italy's failure to qualify for the tournament. In a viral video shared on X, the 35-year-old striker said he would support the Black Stars due to his Ghanaian heritage. 'There is no Italy, so I support Ghana. Obviously, I'm from Ghana and I'm proud of Ghana,' Balotelli stated.
Italy's Absence from the Tournament
Italy, a four-time World Cup champion, missed the 2026 edition, becoming the first FIFA World Cup-winning nation to miss three consecutive tournaments. The 2026 World Cup features an expanded 48-team format, allowing more countries to compete. The tournament has entered the Round of 32, where remaining teams battle for a place in the Round of 16 and beyond.
Africa's Historic Performance
Africa has enjoyed a historic group-stage campaign, with nine of its 10 representatives advancing to the Round of 32. Morocco, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Cape Verde, Egypt, Senegal, Algeria, Ghana, and DR Congo all progressed, while Tunisia was the only African side eliminated. It is the first time an African confederation has recorded the highest progression rate among all continental federations at a FIFA World Cup.
Balotelli's Ghanaian Connection
Although Balotelli represented Italy throughout his international career, his biological parents are Ghanaian. He has repeatedly spoken about his strong connection to the West African country. The former Nice striker's support for Ghana comes as the Black Stars prepare for their Round of 32 match against Colombia on Saturday, July 4.
Ghana's Group Stage Success
Ghana booked their place in the Round of 32 after an impressive group-stage campaign in Group L. The Black Stars began with a 1-0 victory over Panama, followed by a goalless draw against England. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare made several crucial saves, while defenders Mohammed Salisu, Jerome Opoku, and Alexander Djiku helped preserve clean sheets. Ghana became the only African team to complete the group stage without conceding a goal, highlighting the defensive organization instilled by head coach Carlos Queiroz. The four points from their opening two matches secured qualification for the knockout stage with one game to spare, marking Ghana's first appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds since 2010.
CAF's Message to Ghana
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has sent a message to the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ghana is one of 10 African representatives at the tournament, which is being held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
