Barcelona have formally withdrawn from the race to sign Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen from Turkish champions Galatasaray, according to Spanish outlet Sport. The Catalans had been monitoring the Nigerian as a long-term replacement for veteran Polish forward Robert Lewandowski, but the financial demands of the deal have proven insurmountable.
Financial Hurdles Prove Decisive
Osimhen's transfer fee and wage demands have scuppered Barcelona's interest. Galatasaray signed the 27-year-old permanently from Napoli in the summer of 2025 for €75 million, and are reportedly unwilling to accept anything less than double that figure. That means any interested club would need to budget close to €150 million for his signature alone.
The wage picture is even more daunting. Osimhen currently earns €21 million net per year at Galatasaray, and European top-league clubs would likely need to offer close to double that to match his existing package. Combined, these figures place a potential deal far outside Barcelona's financial reach given their ongoing economic constraints.
Alternative Target Identified
According to Sports Mole, Barcelona's first choice to replace Lewandowski is Argentina forward Julian Alvarez. However, Atletico Madrid have so far refused to enter negotiations over a sale, leaving Barcelona's striker search at a standstill. The club is now exploring other options, but no concrete progress has been made.
Osimhen remains one of the most sought-after forwards in world football. Despite his move to Turkey, European clubs have continued to track him, and interest from other leagues is expected to persist throughout the transfer window. His goal-scoring record and physical attributes make him an attractive proposition for many top sides.
Galatasaray's Stance
Galatasaray have been resolute in their refusal to sell Osimhen this summer. Legit.ng previously reported that the Turkish champions blocked his path to leave after rejecting a player-plus-cash swap from Arsenal. The Gunners reportedly offered Swedish forward Viktor Gyokeres and cash for the Nigerian, but Galatasaray rejected the proposal, and both clubs agreed to keep their strikers.
