A consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is on the verge of acquiring a stake exceeding 30% in Liverpool Football Club, with an announcement expected within days, according to sources familiar with the matter. The deal could value the Premier League club at approximately $6 billion, positioning it among the most expensive transactions in football history.
Investor Group and Deal Timeline
The investor group also includes Eduardo Saverin, a co-founder of Facebook, and is led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and a former shareholder in Queens Park Rangers. A source told Sky News, which first reported the story, that a deal announcement was expected within days, though it could slip into next week.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which has owned Liverpool since 2010, is expected to make the announcement. FSG bought the club for £300 million when it was in financial difficulty, and the potential $6 billion valuation reflects a significant increase in value over 16 years.
Financial Implications and Ownership Structure
The transaction values Liverpool at around $6 billion, making it one of the biggest deals ever completed in professional football. Bezos's net worth is estimated by Forbes at over $280 billion, while Saverin is reportedly worth more than $32 billion. If completed, the deal would bring three of the world's wealthiest individuals into co-ownership of one of England's most decorated clubs, raising expectations that the consortium could eventually pursue full control of Anfield.
According to Sky Sports, the last time a stake in Liverpool changed hands was in 2023, when Dynasty Equity acquired a minority interest that valued the club at more than $4.5 billion.
Bezos's First Football Venture and Club Context
This would mark Bezos's first known involvement in football ownership. His interest underscores how top-tier football clubs are increasingly viewed by high-net-worth investors as long-term financial assets. Saverin, 44, was previously part of a consortium that made an unsuccessful bid for Chelsea FC during the 2022 sale triggered by sanctions on then-owner Roman Abramovich.
On the pitch, Liverpool won the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season, but the club is in transition after head coach Arne Slot was dismissed and forward Mohamed Salah departed. The club finished fifth last season, disappointing many supporters. A spokesman for Bhatia's consortium declined to comment on the deal's progress.
Dangote Drops Arsenal Bid
In a separate development, Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote has revealed he will no longer pursue his interest in buying Arsenal Football Club. In an interview on Bloomberg TV in New York on Monday, September 23, Dangote stated that the opportunity to buy the club has passed. He noted that Arsenal's recent success has propelled its valuation from around $2 billion to $4 billion.
