CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has broken his silence on the unresolved dispute surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, confirming that the matter is now in the hands of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Speaking at a press conference in Johannesburg, Motsepe stated that African football fans must wait for the final verdict from CAS to determine the rightful champion.
The controversy stems from the AFCON 2025 final, where Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch during the match. Following the incident, Morocco filed an appeal with CAF, which subsequently ruled in favor of Morocco and stripped Senegal of the title they had won on the field. The Federation of Senegalese Football rejected this decision and escalated the case to CAS, the international body responsible for resolving sports-related legal disputes.
CAS Hearing Delayed Until Late 2025
During the press conference, Motsepe clarified the current status of the legal proceedings. “Regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, we are awaiting the final decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) concerning the dispute from the AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal,” he told CAF TV. According to IU Sport, the CAS hearing is not expected to begin until September or October 2025, contrary to earlier reports that suggested a verdict had already been reached. No official ruling has been confirmed, leaving both nations and African football fans in suspense.
