Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has raised a significant concern regarding player fatigue as Nigeria gears up for its high-stakes Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 semifinal clash against host nation Morocco. The crucial match is scheduled for Wednesday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
High-Energy Campaign Takes Its Toll
Nigeria has been the tournament's standout team, boasting a perfect record of five wins from five matches. Their exhilarating run saw them defeat Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Mozambique, and Algeria, scoring 14 goals in the process with a style defined by relentless pressing and high-intensity play.
However, this physically demanding approach has come at a cost. Speaking ahead of the semifinal, Chelle admitted his squad is feeling the effects of the long tournament. "I find that my group is tired; it might be time for me to change my approach," the coach stated, as reported by Foot Africa.
Tactical Rethink Against the Hosts
Facing a fresh and confident Moroccan side backed by a fervent home crowd, Chelle indicated a potential shift in strategy. For the first time in this AFCON, the Super Eagles might adopt a more measured approach.
Chelle revealed his team could be willing to concede possession early, aiming to grow into the game rather than employing their trademark fast start. This tactical adjustment is designed to conserve energy and manage the immense pressure of the occasion.
Chelle was quick to dismiss any notion that beating Algeria guarantees success against Morocco. "Algeria and Morocco are two good teams with good players. But Morocco doesn't play like Algeria, and Walid Regragui isn't Vladimir Petkovic. I'll have to work, and my group too, to beat this team tomorrow," he cautioned.
Ndidi Suspension Adds to Challenge
In a major blow to Nigeria's plans, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the suspension of captain Wilfred Ndidi. The influential midfielder picked up his second yellow card of the knockout phase during the quarterfinal victory over Algeria, ruling him out of the semifinal.
This setback adds another layer of difficulty for Chelle as he reshuffles his lineup and tactics. Morocco, unbeaten in the tournament and chasing their first AFCON title since 1976, presents a formidable obstacle.
The winner of this tense semifinal will advance to the final to face either Egypt or Senegal, with Nigeria aiming to win its fourth AFCON trophy in history.
