Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has delivered a heartfelt apology to Trabzonspor striker Paul Onuachu following the striker's exclusion from Nigeria's 24-man squad for the upcoming World Cup playoffs. The emotional message comes despite Onuachu's outstanding performance in the Turkish Super Lig this season.
Coach's Difficult Decision
The 47-year-old tactician announced his squad selection for the crucial semifinal clash against the Panthers of Gabon, scheduled for November 13. In a surprising move, Chelle included suspended defender Semi Ajayi while leaving out the in-form Onuachu, who has been dominating the Turkish league.
According to reports from OwnGoal, the former FC Oran coach expressed confidence that the eight forwards he selected can make the difference in the crucial matches. Chelle emphasized that while Onuachu has performed exceptionally well, not every deserving player can make the final team list due to numerical constraints.
Onuachu's Impressive Form
The 31-year-old striker has been in sensational form for Trabzonspor, currently leading the Turkish Super Lig scoring charts with seven goals from just 11 appearances. His exceptional performances earned him the prestigious Turkish Super Lig Goal of the Month award in both August and September, cementing his status as a fan favorite.
Onuachu last represented the national team in June during the World Cup qualifiers under former coach Finidi George. The Super Eagles played a 1-1 draw with South Africa before suffering a disappointing 2-1 loss to Benin in those matches.
Squad Composition and Support
Chelle's final squad selection consists of eight strikers, five midfielders, eight defenders, and three goalkeepers. Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen, who currently leads the UEFA Champions League scoring charts, will spearhead Nigeria's attack against Gabon.
Nigerian sports journalist Eyere Ekuta has come out in support of Chelle's decisions, urging fans to respect the coach's judgment. In an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, Ekuta stated that Chelle has proven his capability to manage the senior national team effectively since taking over.
The Super Eagles will face the Panthers in their first semifinal at Stade Prince Heritier Moulay Hassan in Rabat. The winner will advance to face either DR Congo or Cameroon in the next round of the World Cup playoffs.
