DR Congo Issues Daring Warning to Cristiano Ronaldo Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup
The Democratic Republic of Congo has delivered a bold and provocative message to football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This comes after the Leopards secured their first World Cup qualification in 52 years, marking a historic milestone for the nation.
Historic Qualification and Group Stage Draw
DR Congo earned their spot in the 2026 tournament by defeating Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff final, ending a drought that stretched back to 1974. According to reports from Fox Sports, the team has been drawn into Group K, where they will face Portugal, Colombia, and debutant Uzbekistan. Their opening match is scheduled against Portugal on June 17, 2026, followed by games against Colombia on June 24 and Uzbekistan on June 28.
Sports Minister Didier Bodembo praised the team's hard-fought qualification, noting that it involved 13 matches, including 10 group stage fixtures and three playoff encounters. In a comment quoted by Goal, Bodembo emphasized the nation's support and issued a direct warning to Ronaldo, stating, "In our first match at the 2026 World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo will be in tears." This reference alludes to Ronaldo's emotional reaction after Portugal's elimination by Morocco in the 2022 World Cup.
Eligibility Controversy and Ongoing Challenges
Despite the celebration, DR Congo's qualification faces uncertainty due to an eligibility dispute. The Nigeria Football Federation has challenged the victory, alleging that some DR Congo players, including playoff-winning goal scorer Axel Tuanzebe, did not meet the Congolese constitution's requirements against dual citizenship. Although FIFA dismissed the case, the NFF has escalated it to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, leaving a question mark over DR Congo's participation.
Team Morale and Presidential Rewards
Adding to the confident atmosphere, player Cedric Bakambu was seen with a message on Yoane Wissa's Instagram stating, "Portugal can be handled," reinforcing the team's bold stance. Meanwhile, DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi has promised significant rewards for the players, including brand-new jeeps, cash gifts, and plots of land, in recognition of their historic achievement.
As the 2026 World Cup approaches, DR Congo's daring message to Cristiano Ronaldo highlights their determination and rising confidence on the global football stage, even as they navigate off-field controversies.
