Egypt's national team coach, Hossam Hassan, has stirred controversy ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations third-place playoff by claiming other nations are jealous of Egypt's footballing success. The Pharaohs are set to face Nigeria's Super Eagles on Saturday.
"Everyone is Jealous of Our Seven Titles" - Hassan's Bold Claim
In a fiery press conference, Hossam Hassan asserted that Egypt's record seven Africa Cup of Nations titles are a source of envy across the continent. He framed his team's journey not just as a sporting campaign, but as a battle against perceived unfairness and jealousy.
"Egypt does not need excuses or apologies. Egypt is great, and no one will dare to win seven titles like us," Hassan declared. He expanded on this sentiment, stating, "We are Arabs of Africa, and Egypt is great, the mother of the Arabs and the mother of Africa in terms of history and titles and everyone is jealous."
Coach Levels Serious Accusations Against AFCON Organizers
Beyond the claims of envy, Hassan launched a direct critique of the tournament's organizing committee. His primary grievance centered on the fixture schedule, which he believes placed Egypt at a significant disadvantage during the semi-final stage.
He pointed out that his team had less rest than their opponents, questioning why Egypt played a day later on the same pitch Senegal had used. "By what FIFA law is what happened to the Egypt team done? When a team reaches the semi-finals, do you honour it or torture it?" he asked rhetorically.
Hassan insisted that fairness demanded equal rest for all semi-finalists to ensure a competitive match. He argued that Egypt was the only side placed at a clear disadvantage by the scheduling decisions.
Focus Shifts to Super Eagles Showdown
Despite the disappointment of missing the final, Egypt now aims to end their campaign positively against Nigeria. The match, a third-place playoff, is scheduled for Saturday.
This encounter will be a replay of a pre-tournament friendly where Hassan's side defeated Nigeria 2–1 in Cairo. That result will give the Pharaohs psychological confidence, but the Super Eagles will be eager for redemption on the competitive stage.
Hassan also revealed he instructed his players to ignore distracting chants from the stands during their semi-final, urging them to stay focused—a mindset they will need against the formidable Nigerian team.
The stage is set for a high-stakes clash between two African giants, with Egypt looking to validate their coach's proud words and Nigeria seeking to finish their own campaign on a triumphant note.
