Fenerbahce presidential candidate Aziz Yildirim has reportedly traveled to England to initiate transfer discussions for Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey. The Fulham star is viewed as a potential replacement for Dutch defender Jayden Oosterwolde, whose future at the Turkish club remains uncertain.
Yildirim's Mission in London
According to Turkish media reports, Yildirim is expected to meet with Fulham officials and the Nigerian defender's representatives during his visit to London. This move underscores Fenerbahce's determination to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season, even as the club's presidential election campaign continues.
Bassey, who joined Fulham from Ajax in 2023 for €22.5 million, has established himself as a reliable defender in the Premier League. His current contract runs until June 2027, with an option for further extension. Transfermarkt values the 25-year-old at around €28 million, indicating the significant financial commitment required for any potential deal.
Ideal Replacement for Oosterwolde
Fenerbahce see Bassey as the perfect solution should Oosterwolde leave the club this summer. The Nigerian international's versatility allows him to operate both as a center-back and left-back, qualities that make him an attractive option for the Turkish side. Yildirim has placed Bassey high on his shortlist and is keen to secure an early understanding before the presidential election concludes.
Interestingly, both Yildirim and fellow candidate Hakan Safi are reportedly working behind the scenes on potential reinforcements. Yildirim hopes to secure preliminary agreements during the holiday period so negotiations can move quickly if he wins the election.
Bassey's Impressive Season
From a sporting perspective, Bassey arrives with significant experience and consistent playing time at the highest level. The defender has made 32 appearances this season, accumulating 2,648 minutes for Fulham, cementing his place as a regular starter. Since arriving in England, Bassey has rebuilt his reputation following a difficult spell at Ajax, where he faced criticism.
At Fulham, the Nigerian international has become one of the club's most trusted defensive options due to his aggressive tackling, recovery pace, and composure in possession. His ability to play across the backline is viewed as a major advantage for clubs seeking defensive versatility. Whether Fulham will entertain offers remains uncertain, given his importance to the squad and long-term contract.
Financial Implications for Ajax
A potential transfer could provide a financial boost for Ajax due to a sell-on clause included in Bassey's move to Fulham. Reports indicate the Dutch club is entitled to approximately 10 percent of the profit Fulham makes from any future sale. If Fulham sells the defender above his market value of €28 million, they would make a profit of around €10 million, triggering a payment of slightly above €1 million to Ajax.
Additionally, Ajax is expected to receive a solidarity contribution worth 0.5 percent of the total transfer fee due to Bassey's development period at the Johan Cruyff Arena. This could generate an additional €163,000 for the Dutch giants if the transfer reaches the estimated valuation.
Super Eagles Star Remains Key
Bassey was included in coach Eric Chelle's squad for Nigeria's upcoming friendly matches against Poland and Portugal in June. He is among several established stars omitted from the Unity Cup squad, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Fulham teammates Samuel Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi.
