Manchester United star Amad Diallo has received praise from FIFA and CAF after coming off the bench to score the winning goal for Côte d'Ivoire against Ecuador at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Historic Victory for Africa
Côte d'Ivoire opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Ecuador, marking the first victory by an African team at the tournament. South Africa lost 2-0 to co-hosts Mexico, Brazil held Morocco to a 1-1 draw, and Sweden crushed Tunisia 5-1 after the Elephants' win. Six African nations are yet to play, with Egypt and Cape Verde facing Belgium and Spain on June 15.
FIFA and CAF Messages
FIFA shared a post on its official X page with a one-word praise, “Him”, for Diallo after his match-winning performance. The winger played only 34 minutes but completed five dribbles and scored the decisive goal, securing all three points for his country and the continent. CAF noted that the goal sets Côte d'Ivoire on the path to reach the knockout stage for the first time in World Cup history.
Despite Diallo's heroics, RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, linked to Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool, was named man of the match.
Diallo's Reaction
Diallo expressed delight with the performance, calling it necessary as Emerse Fae's team aims for history. “We needed that. We came here to make history. We still have two more matches ahead of us, and we need to approach them with the same mentality and try to win them,” he told FIFA.
He added: “We had to stay focused. We knew it was going to be a difficult match because we know the Ecuadorian players – they're physically very strong. They caused us problems, but we stayed composed and remained focused.”
Côte d'Ivoire face Germany next before taking on Curacao in their final group match. A win against Curacao would take them to six points and guarantee a historic passage to the knockout stage for the first time in four attempts.
