FIFA President Gianni Infantino Confirms Iran's World Cup Participation in U.S.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has officially announced that Iran will compete in the upcoming World Cup, with all their scheduled matches set to take place in the United States as originally planned. This declaration comes amid ongoing uncertainties and diplomatic tensions surrounding Iran's involvement in the tournament due to the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran.
Iran's World Cup Schedule and Relocation Discussions
According to reports from the BBC, the Iranian football federation had been in negotiations with FIFA earlier this month to potentially move their World Cup matches from the U.S. to Mexico. However, Infantino, speaking to AFP, firmly stated, "Iran will be at the World Cup. We're delighted because they're a very, very strong team, I'm very happy. The matches will be played where they are supposed to be, according to the draw."
Iran is scheduled to face New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21, both in Los Angeles, followed by a match against Egypt in Seattle on June 26. The 2026 World Cup, which kicks off on June 11, is being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Political Context and International Reactions
The situation has been further complicated by political statements from both sides. U.S. President Donald Trump recently commented on social media, suggesting that Iran should not participate in the tournament "for their own life and safety," while also extending a welcome. In response, Iranian officials argued that the U.S. should forfeit its place instead.
Additionally, Iran's Minister of Sports and Youth, Ahmad Donyamali, expressed concerns about the country's ability to take part. Despite this, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum indicated that Mexico was prepared to host Iran's matches if necessary, showcasing international flexibility.
Infantino's Assurance and Future Outlook
Infantino, who attended Iran's 5-0 friendly victory against Costa Rica in Turkey, emphasized his confidence in the team's participation. He noted, "I've seen the team, I've spoken to the players and the coach, so everything is fine." This reassurance aims to quell any doubts and ensure a smooth execution of the World Cup schedule, highlighting FIFA's commitment to maintaining the tournament's integrity amidst geopolitical challenges.
