Footballer sacked and arrested after brutal elbow

A shocking incident of on-field violence has led to a footballer's arrest and immediate dismissal from his club in Wales. The event, captured on video during a match on Saturday, January 17, 2026, has sparked widespread outrage and a police investigation.

Viral Video Captures Brutal On-Field Assault

The controversy erupted after footage from an Ardal North West League match between Trearddur Bay FC and Porthmadog FC began circulating online. The clip, which has amassed over 10 million views, appears to show Trearddur Bay player Tom Taylor, 35, deliberately targeting a Porthmadog defender.

Just before a penalty was taken, Taylor is seen delivering a forceful elbow strike directly to the opponent's jaw. The incident reportedly occurred in the 59th minute of the game. Some reports identify the player on the receiving end of the blow as Danny Brookwell, who had been fouled moments earlier.

Swift Action from Club and Police

Public reaction to the viral video was swift and severe, with many calling for Taylor to be banned from football and even arrested. Authorities moved quickly in response.

North Wales Police confirmed they are investigating the incident. In a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday, January 18, they said: "North Wales Police are aware of a video circulating online relating to an incident that occurred at a football match between Trearddur Bay FC and Porthmadog FC on Saturday (17 January)."

The police confirmed that as part of their investigation, a 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and was being held in custody. They urged the public not to speculate and to come forward with any information.

Trearddur Bay FC acted with equal speed. The club first announced Taylor's immediate suspension via social media, stating they "in no way condones the use of unlawful behaviour by its staff or players."

Player Released Following Internal Review

Following an internal review, the club took the decisive step of terminating Taylor's contract. In an update, Trearddur Bay FC stated: "Following an internal review, the decision was taken to release the suspended player involved with immediate effect."

The club issued a sincere apology, saying: "Trearddur Bay Football Club does not condone violence in any form and acknowledges that the incident should not have occurred. The club offers its sincere apologies to the opposition player involved, CPD Porthmadog, match officials, supporters, and the wider football community." They also pledged full cooperation with all external investigations.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has also acknowledged the incident, confirming they are aware of it and will be conducting their own review, as tier three matches fall under their jurisdiction.

This case highlights the serious consequences of on-field violence, transitioning a sporting disciplinary matter into a potential criminal case, with a player's career now in ruins following his arrest and sacking.
