Fulham have communicated to AC Milan that they are unwilling to meet the previously agreed buy option for Samuel Chukwueze, casting further doubt on the Nigerian winger's future. The Premier League side believe the €26 million fee is excessive given the player's inconsistent performances during his loan spell at Craven Cottage.
Fulham Seek Renegotiation
According to reports from Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Fulham remain interested in securing Chukwueze's services permanently but only under revised financial terms. The London club consider the original buy clause outdated after a mixed 2025/26 season in which the 27-year-old showed flashes of brilliance but failed to maintain consistency.
Fulham manager Marco Silva's side are now exploring the possibility of negotiating a lower transfer fee with the Rossoneri. Should AC Milan refuse to adjust their valuation, Chukwueze will likely return to Italy this summer, though his long-term role at San Siro remains uncertain.
Milan's Transitional Phase
AC Milan are currently in a period of transition, with key appointments yet to be finalized. The club lacks a permanent sporting director and head coach, delaying decisions on several players returning from loan. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, formerly involved in sporting operations, is currently working as a pundit in the United States.
With seven loanees expected back, the fate of each player may hinge on the next manager's tactical preferences. According to Total Football Analysis, Chukwueze's style does not suit Massimiliano Allegri's preferred 3-5-2 formation, which limits opportunities for natural wingers.
However, if Milan appoint a coach favoring attacking systems like 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, the Nigerian could provide valuable depth and experience on the flanks rather than being sold or loaned again.
International Duty
Chukwueze has joined the Super Eagles camp in Leiria, Portugal, ahead of Nigeria's friendly against Portugal on June 10. His arrival brings the squad to 22 players as preparations intensify for the match at the Estádio Municipal de Leiria.
The winger missed recent fixtures, including the Unity Cup and the friendly against Poland, following the death of his mother. He is expected to train fully as head coach Eric Chelle builds team chemistry.
Nigeria enter the match on a six-game unbeaten run after a 2-2 draw with Poland. The friendly is part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the next Africa Cup of Nations.
Chukwueze's return to international duty offers a chance for stability amid another season of club uncertainty. The Super Eagles hope to maintain momentum as they continue their buildup.
