Galatasaray Coach Reacts After 4-1 Loss to Samsunspor

Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk has reacted to his team's heavy 4-1 defeat against Samsunspor in the Turkish Super League, a result that delayed their title celebration. The Lions needed only a victory to secure a fourth consecutive league championship, but they suffered a humiliating loss at home.

Match Summary: Early Lead Turns into Disaster

Galatasaray started brightly, with Victor Osimhen providing an assist for Yunus Akgun to score the opening goal in the ninth minute. However, the team collapsed in the second half after goalkeeper Gunay Guvenc received a red card for a professional handball when the score was 2-1. Samsunspor capitalized on the numerical advantage, scoring two more goals to seal a 4-1 victory.

The defeat means Galatasaray's title celebration is postponed. Fenerbahce closed the gap to four points after beating Istanbul Basaksehir, but Galatasaray can still clinch the title if they win their next match against Antalyaspor.

Okan Buruk's Reaction: Disappointment and Self-Criticism

Buruk expressed disappointment and noted that the result confirmed his earlier warning that the championship was not yet won. “After the last game, everyone declared us champions. I emphasised this last week as well. You don't win a championship without playing games. We saw that on the field today,” he told GS TV.

The coach admitted that individual and team mistakes cost them the match. “Actually, the start of the match was very good. We started with a goal. After our opponent equalised at 1-1, we played a bit poorly. We played well in the first 10 minutes of the second half. There were chances that Baris and Osimhen couldn't convert. Then it became 2-1. Our opponents took advantage of all the chances that came their way. They played well. Individually, we played below our usual standard, and as a team, we made a lot of mistakes. I won't say it's regional, but it was a day where we made a lot of mistakes as a team,” he added.

Buruk Defends Goalkeeper Guvenc

Guvenc's red card was a turning point, but Buruk defended his player, calling the incident unfortunate. “Gunay's red card was unfortunate. When the opponent's foot hit Gunay's hand, his hand opened. Gunay didn't immediately open his hand. The opponent's foot hit Gunay's elbow, and when the ball opened, Gunay's hand went to the ball. It was an unfortunate situation. I don't know how it will be evaluated,” he explained.

Pundit Highlights Osimhen's Importance

Turkish pundit Zeki Uzundurukan commented on Victor Osimhen's value to Galatasaray, stating that no other striker can replicate his commitment, passion, and work ethic. Osimhen's assist in the match underlined his crucial role, even in defeat.
