2026 World Cup: Germany Snubs Nigeria-Eligible Goalkeeper Noah Atubolu
Germany Drops Nigeria-Eligible Goalie Atubolu for World Cup

Germany have announced their 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, and Nigeria-eligible goalkeeper Noah Atubolu was not included in the team. The Freiburg shot-stopper, who recently suffered a 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the UEFA Europa League final, was overlooked by head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Atubolu's Omission and Nigeria's Opportunity

As confirmed by the German Football Association (DFB), Nagelsmann named his World Cup squad, which includes 40-year-old Manuel Neuer, who came out of international retirement. Atubolu's exclusion could prompt the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to renew efforts to convince him to switch his international allegiance ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper was born in Germany to a Nigerian father and a German mother and has previously stated his intention to represent the country of his birth. He earned his first senior call-up in October 2025 but has been overlooked since then. Continued snubs might lead him to reconsider and play for Nigeria.

Nigeria's Goalkeeping Situation

The Super Eagles have struggled in the goalkeeping department. Stanley Nwabali has not played since the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after leaving Chippa United, while Francis Uzoho has failed to impress. Maduka Okoye remains the only top goalkeeper in the squad. Nigeria would welcome Atubolu, especially after Arthur Okonkwo recently switched his international allegiance.

Atubolu's Experience and Future

Atubolu has represented Germany at youth levels and helped the Under-21 team reach the European Championship final last summer, where they lost to England. He said the experience built his mentality for the future. Despite the Europa League final loss, he remains motivated to reach more finals.

At 23, Atubolu has many years ahead to become Germany's number one goalkeeper and may not consider Nigeria's approach immediately. However, his omission from the World Cup squad could change his perspective.

Arthur Okonkwo's Readiness

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Arthur Okonkwo declared his readiness for his Super Eagles debut after earning his maiden call-up. The Wrexham goalkeeper was named in the Unity Cup squad and the list for high-profile friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
