Dutch football legend Mark van Bommel has reached a full agreement to become the new head coach of the Belgian national team, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. The 48-year-old will succeed Rudi Garcia, who is expected to leave the role following Belgium's campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Deal in place until 2028
While contracts are yet to be signed, all parties have finalized the terms, with the official announcement expected once the paperwork is completed. Romano confirmed the development on social media, stating: “Mark van Bommel as new Belgium head coach, here we go! Deal in place until June 2028 for van Bommel, ready to replace Rudi Garcia.”
First international role for Van Bommel
Van Bommel takes on his first international managerial role after a successful club career. The former Netherlands captain has previously managed PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg, and Royal Antwerp. At Antwerp, he guided the Belgian club to a historic league and cup double during the 2022–23 season, cementing his reputation in Belgian football.
