Argentina's 3-1 victory over Switzerland in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals was preceded by an emotional tribute to late South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams. Lionel Messi and his teammates wore black armbands and observed a minute of silence in honor of Adams, who died at age 25 just weeks after representing Bafana Bafana at the tournament.
Argentina Players Wear Black Armbands
Before kick-off in Kansas City, FIFA observed a minute's silence ahead of both the England versus Norway and Argentina versus Switzerland quarter-finals in memory of Adams. While all four teams participated, Argentina went further by wearing black armbands throughout the match as an additional mark of respect. According to reports from The Hindu, the black armbands also honored former Argentina captain Antonio Rattin, who died earlier the same day. Rattin made 382 appearances for Boca Juniors, scoring 28 goals and winning four league titles, and represented Argentina from 1959 to 1969, featuring in the 1962 and 1966 World Cups.
Adams' Impact at the World Cup
Adams had played in three matches as South Africa reached the knockout stage for the first time in their history. His sudden death shocked the football world, prompting tributes from FIFA President Gianni Infantino and others. Infantino described Adams' passing as heartbreaking and extended condolences to his family, teammates, and friends.
Fans Criticized During Moment of Silence
Per The Mirror, the tribute was marred by some Argentina supporters who continued singing, chanting, and beating drums throughout the minute of silence. Although many fans eventually quietened, the drumming and chants remained audible, drawing criticism on social media. Argentina's players, however, maintained their respectful tribute as they advanced to the semi-finals.
