In a swift move to steady the ship, Manchester United have turned to a familiar face, reaching a verbal agreement with former midfielder Michael Carrick to become the club's interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Carrick Steps Into the Dugout
The 44-year-old, a five-time Premier League winner with the club, will take immediate charge, stepping into the role previously held on a temporary basis by another former teammate, Darren Fletcher. Fletcher had assumed control for the matches against Burnley and Brighton following the recent dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
Carrick's appointment was confirmed after face-to-face interviews at the club. He is expected to be in the technical area for the crucial Manchester derby this Saturday lunchtime, marking a rapid return to a leadership position at Old Trafford.
A Familiar Face in a Time of Change
This is not Carrick's first stint in the United hot seat. He previously took caretaker charge for three matches in late 2021 following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, before Ralf Rangnick's arrival as interim boss. His experience within the club's setup is seen as a stabilizing factor.
His staff will be bolstered by the arrival of Steve Holland, the former Chelsea and England assistant manager, adding significant top-level coaching experience to the interim set-up.
The Path to Carrick's Appointment
The coaching change comes after a mixed run under Darren Fletcher. He oversaw a 2-2 draw away at Burnley's Turf Moor, but his tenure was quickly marred by an FA Cup exit. United were defeated by Brighton, with the winning goal scored by their former striker, Danny Welbeck.
With Carrick now at the helm until the summer, the club's hierarchy will hope his deep understanding of the club's culture and his previous coaching experience can provide a platform for improved results as they navigate the final stretch of the campaign.
