Mikel Obi Explains Cole Palmer's Form Slump at Chelsea This Season
Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has provided a detailed explanation for why Cole Palmer has lost form and is struggling to perform this season. Palmer started the campaign slowly, with many initially attributing his troubles to a persistent groin injury that hampered his early performances.
Despite returning to full fitness and playing under a new manager, Liam Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca in January, Palmer's performances have remained below expectations. The England international has failed to replicate the influential displays that characterized his first two seasons at Chelsea since joining from Manchester City in 2023.
Statistical Decline and Fan Concerns
According to Transfermarkt data, Palmer has managed just 10 goals and three assists in 28 matches across all competitions this season. With only about eight matches remaining, there are growing concerns that he may not significantly add to this tally. Fans have expressed worry about what has gone wrong for a player who previously showed such promise.
While some supporters initially pointed to Palmer's groin injury as the primary reason for his slow start, others partially blamed Maresca's tactical setup for limiting the effectiveness of Chelsea's best players. However, with both the injury concerns resolved and Maresca departed from the club, Palmer continues to deliver questionable performances that have raised serious questions about his current form.
Mikel's Surprising Revelation
On his Obi One Podcast, Mikel offered an unexpected explanation for Palmer's struggles. The former Chelsea midfielder claimed that Nicolas Jackson's absence has played a significant role in Palmer's poor performances this season. This admission has surprised many fans, given that Mikel frequently criticized the Senegalese forward during his time at Stamford Bridge.
"I actually think right now we are missing him. I can say that on the pod. What he gave us, no striker is providing right now," Mikel stated. "Yes, João Pedro is scoring goals, but look at what Nicolas Jackson offered in terms of high pressing and his telepathic connection with Cole Palmer. Palmer looks lost without him."
Mikel elaborated further on Jackson's importance to the team dynamic: "Nobody is giving us that link-up play. Was he scoring enough? Maybe not. But was he giving his all for the club? Absolutely. My only issue was competition. I felt he wasn't patient enough to stay and fight for his place. If he were here now, he would be the main man because he is certainly better than Liam Delap, who still needs to improve his game."
Jackson's Uncertain Future
The situation is complicated by Jackson's current status. The forward is unlikely to play for Chelsea again, even though his loan spell at Bayern Munich has not met the conditions necessary to make the deal permanent. This leaves Chelsea without a player whom Mikel believes was crucial to Palmer's previous success.
Mikel's analysis suggests that Palmer's form is intrinsically linked to specific partnerships on the field, particularly his connection with Jackson. Without that understanding and complementary playing style, Palmer appears to be struggling to find his rhythm and influence matches as he did in previous seasons.
The former Super Eagles captain's comments highlight how individual player form can be affected by team dynamics and specific partnerships. As Chelsea continues their season with only a handful of matches remaining, all eyes will be on whether Palmer can rediscover his best form or if the issues identified by Mikel will continue to hinder his performances.
