Alhaji Sani Zubairu, a retired FIFA referee hailing from Bauchi State, was elected as the president of the NFRA during the 2023 delegates conference held at Bovina Hotels in Kwara State on April 29, 2023. His death comes just a few weeks after the losses of former Super Eagles Captain Henry Nwosu and ex-national team coach Adegboye Onigbinde, compounding the grief within Nigerian football circles.

Zubairu's contributions to football extended beyond his presidency. He also served as the Head of the Refereeing Unit of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and held the position of Secretary of its Referees Committee, showcasing his deep involvement in the sport's administrative and developmental aspects.

Reacting to the tragic news, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, the General Secretary of the NFF, paid heartfelt tribute to the late referee. He described Zubairu as "a very diligent and astute worker" who was beloved by subordinates, colleagues, and superiors alike for his simplicity and uncommon humility.

"He served Nigeria meritoriously on the field and in the office, working assiduously to impact knowledge and raise new generations of referees that would make Nigeria proud at home and internationally," Sanusi stated. "The NFF and Nigerian football will miss him greatly. We pray that God will grant him eternal rest and also grant his immediate family, friends, relations, the NFF family, and the NFRA the fortitude to bear the big loss."

Gbenga Elegbeleye, Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), also expressed his condolences to Zubairu's immediate family, the NFRA, and the NFF. He highlighted the former referee's significant contributions to the development of the league, noting that his legacy will serve as an inspiration to active and aspiring referees across the country.
