Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title by defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties in the final held in Budapest on Saturday night, May 30. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, marking the first time in a decade that the final went to extra time.
Early Goal Sets the Tone
Arsenal took an early lead in the sixth minute when Kai Havertz broke through the PSG defense and calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Matvey Safonov. The defending champions dominated possession for much of the match but found it difficult to break down a resilient Arsenal defense.
Dembélé Levels from the Spot
PSG's persistence paid off in the 65th minute when Ousmane Dembélé converted a penalty kick to level the score. The goal brought the match to extra time for the first time in a Champions League final in ten years.
Penalty Shootout Drama
In the shootout, Eberechi Eze missed an early spot kick for Arsenal, but David Raya saved Nuno Mendes' penalty to keep Arsenal level. Lucas Beraldo scored the decisive penalty for PSG, meaning Gabriel had to convert to keep Arsenal's hopes alive. However, he blasted his shot high over the bar, sparking celebrations among PSG players and fans at Puskas Arena.
Historic Achievement
PSG captain Marquinhos expressed his joy after the match: "It's incredible, back to back. From the very first day of this season, the coach said it's hard to win, and winning twice is even more difficult. So we all had to get back to work. That was the mentality."
With this victory, PSG joins Real Madrid as the only team to successfully defend the Champions League since the competition was rebranded in 1992. Real Madrid achieved the feat by winning three consecutive titles between 2016 and 2018.
