Real Madrid Captain Carvajal to Leave Club at End of Season

Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal is set to leave the club at the conclusion of the current season, bringing an end to a highly successful tenure that saw him become one of the most decorated players in the club's illustrious history. The Spanish giants confirmed the defender's departure in an official statement released on Monday, May 18.

"Real Madrid wishes to express its gratitude and affection to one of the greatest legends of our club and world football," the club said in the statement. Carvajal, 34, made 450 appearances for Real Madrid and won 27 trophies during his time at the Santiago Bernabéu, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns.

The right-back progressed through Real Madrid's La Fábrica youth academy before joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2012. Real Madrid re-signed him the following year, and he went on to establish himself as one of the club's key players for more than a decade, becoming a mainstay in the starting lineup and a symbol of the club's modern success.

Club president Florentino Pérez praised Carvajal's contribution and legacy at the club. "Carvajal is a legend and a symbol of Real Madrid and its academy," Pérez said. "He has been an example of dedication, professionalism, and loyalty. His name will forever be etched in the history of our club."

The defender had reportedly hoped to represent Spain at this summer's FIFA World Cup, but injuries throughout the campaign have disrupted his season. According to Spanish media reports, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente is not expected to include him in the squad for the tournament, as Carvajal has struggled with fitness issues that have limited his playing time.

Carvajal is set to play his final match for Real Madrid this weekend at the Santiago Bernabéu against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga. His departure comes at the end of another disappointing campaign for Real Madrid, who are set to finish a second consecutive season without winning a major trophy. The club has already begun planning for the future, with several young talents expected to step up in Carvajal's absence.
