Super Eagles Held to 2-2 Draw by Jordan in Antalya Friendly
The Super Eagles of Nigeria concluded their two-match friendly series in Antalya, Turkey, with a disappointing 2-2 draw against Jordan yesterday. Despite fielding a mix of experienced and new players, the Nigerian side failed to secure a victory in a game that lacked significant quality, particularly as Jordan prepares for the upcoming 2026 World Cup in North America, while Nigeria is not part of the tournament.
Early Pressure and Controversial Decisions
Jordan started the match aggressively, forcing two consecutive corner kicks early on to assert their intent. Their early dominance paid off in the 15th minute when Mousa Tamari capitalized on a pass from Al-Rawabdeh to beat Nigerian goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, giving Jordan the lead. Nigeria thought they had equalized just six minutes later when Raphael Onyedika scored from a clever cut-back by Moses Simon, but the goal was controversially disallowed by the match officials, leaving the Super Eagles frustrated.
Nigeria's Fightback and Lead
Undeterred by the setback, the Super Eagles equalized in the 30th minute. Captain for the night, Moses Simon, marking his 97th appearance for Nigeria, showcased his predatory instincts. After Ademola Lookman's initial shot was blocked, Simon reacted quickly to slot home with a precise left-footed finish, scoring his second goal in as many games this month. Nigeria completed the turnaround four minutes before halftime when Bright Osayi-Samuel delivered a pinpoint cross to Emmanuel Fernandez, who was making his full debut. The Glasgow Rangers player displayed remarkable composure to control the ball and fire a left-footed strike into the net, giving Nigeria a 2-1 lead at the break.
Second-Half Changes and Jordan's Equalizer
The second half saw a more physical approach from both sides. In the 57th minute, goalkeeper Francis Uzoho was forced off due to an injury sustained during a clearance, replaced by Adebayo Adeleye. Seeking to strengthen the midfield, coach Eric Chelle introduced veterans Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi, with Iwobi earning his 98th cap for Nigeria, moving him closer to the exclusive "Century Club." However, Jordan's growing prowess as a global football force was evident as they pushed for an equalizer, which came in the 77th minute to level the score at 2-2.
Late Drama and Red Card
In a final attempt to secure a win, Nigeria handed a senior debut to Philip Otele, who replaced Frank Onyeka, while Samuel Chukwueze came on for Moses Simon. The closing stages of the match were marred by tension, culminating in a straight red card for Alex Iwobi in the dying moments for unsportsmanlike behavior, adding to Nigeria's woes on a day that ended in a draw.
