Four key players of Nigeria's Super Eagles have made an early departure from the national team camp in Morocco, heading straight back to their European clubs following the country's third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Early Exit for Key Eagles Stars
The quartet, granted permission to leave shortly after the bronze-medal match, includes star striker Victor Osimhen, midfield stalwart Wilfred Ndidi, forward Paul Onuachu, and defender Chidozie Awaziem. They travelled together on a private jet from Casablanca, cutting short their AFCON 2025 participation.
This swift exit means the players will not be present for the official medal presentation ceremony scheduled after the tournament's final on Sunday, January 19, 2026. The bronze medals were not distributed immediately after Nigeria's victory over Egypt on Saturday, January 18.
Reports indicate that Osimhen, Ndidi, and Onuachu are returning to their respective clubs in Turkey, while Awaziem is headed back to France. The decision was influenced by pressing club commitments and the need for recovery after the intense continental competition.
Bronze Victory and Lagos Detour
Nigeria secured its record ninth AFCON bronze medal by defeating Egypt 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a tense goalless draw in regular time. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was the hero, saving spot kicks from Egyptian stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.
Interestingly, before their flight to Europe, Osimhen, Ndidi, and Awaziem were spotted in the early hours of Sunday at a nightclub in Lagos. The outing was part of a birthday celebration for socialite Babatunde "Tunde Perry" Akinpelu, showing the players briefly celebrated their achievement on home soil.
Osimhen, who was rested for the third-place playoff by coach Eric Chelle, leaves the tournament with an impressive personal tally of four goals and two assists from his five appearances. Captain Wilfred Ndidi featured in every match except one, despite managing an injury sustained in the quarterfinal.
Squad Dispersal and Tournament Aftermath
Other squad members, including Sevilla-based players Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke, have also departed Morocco. The remaining players and team officials are expected to stay for the official medal ceremony following the final match.
Nigeria's campaign ended on a high note with the bronze medal, showcasing resilience after a semi-final defeat to host nation Morocco. The early return of key players underscores the constant balance national team stars must strike between international duty and club responsibilities in European leagues.
