Esther Okoronkwo Gifts Millions to Strangers, Visits Abia Governor
Super Falcons Star Spreads Christmas Joy in Abia

Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has brought the spirit of Christmas to life in Nigeria with a remarkable act of generosity. The 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) champion spent the festive period in Abia State, where she handed out millions of naira to strangers on the streets.

A Hero's Homecoming and Heartfelt Giving

The 28-year-old striker, who plays for AFC Toronto, is enjoying a short break from her club. She chose to spend her holidays in Nigeria, specifically in Abia State, marking a special homecoming. In a viral display of kindness, Okoronkwo visited various locations in Umuahia, including a shopping mall, market square, and roadside spots.

Her mission was simple: to spread joy. She was seen gifting selected individuals the sum of ₦200,000 each, with the total distributed amount reportedly exceeding ₦2 million. The gesture was captured in videos that quickly spread across social media platform X.

From WAFCON Glory to Community Impact

Okoronkwo's festive generosity comes on the heels of her monumental achievement in women's football. She was a surprise inclusion in coach Justine Madugu’s squad for the 13th WAFCON in Morocco. There, she emerged as the tournament's heroine.

In the final against hosts Morocco, she scored the opening goal from the penalty spot in the 64th minute. She didn't stop there, providing two crucial assists for Folashade Ijamilusi and Jennifer Echegini. Her efforts inspired a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory at the Stade Olympique in Rabat, securing the championship for Nigeria.

For her outstanding performance, she was awarded the Player of the Match in the final and also received the Super Falcons’ Fans’ Player of the Tournament honour.

Meeting the Governor and Fan Reactions

Beyond her street philanthropy, Esther Okoronkwo also paid a courtesy visit to the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti. During the visit, she presented her jersey to the governor. She was hosted alongside other football stars, Miracle Useni Ofem of Abia Angels and Christy Ucheibe of Benfica FC.

The online reaction to her charitable act has been overwhelmingly positive. One of the most talked-about moments was when a man dressed as Father Christmas reportedly fainted after receiving the unexpected cash gift from the footballer.

Fans on social media expressed their admiration. User @HafsatMSS commented, "Pure class and a big heart. Esther Okoronkwo representing the Super Falcons with love, humility, and true Christmas spirit." Another user, @Andy_Dgr8, humorously noted, "Sapa turn Santa to receiver and not the giver."

This Christmas celebration by Esther Okoronkwo beautifully blends her status as a national sports hero with a profound sense of community and giving, leaving an indelible mark of joy in Abia State.
