Ahead of a highly anticipated clash at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Tunisia defender Montassar Talbi has sent a strong message to Nigeria's Super Eagles, asserting that the Carthage Eagles have earned the respect of the continent.
Confidence Built on Consistency
The two teams are set to face off at the Complexe Sportif de Fez on Saturday, December 27, in a match that could decide the group leader. Both sides come into the encounter with winning momentum. Tunisia opened their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Uganda, thanks to a header from Ellyes Skhiri and a brace from Elias Achouri.
Nigeria, on the other hand, secured a 2-1 win against Tanzania in their first match, with goals from Hull City's Semi Ajayi and Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman.
Talbi, who plays for French club FC Lorient, emphasized that Tunisia's reputation is not a recent development. "Tunisia got their respect for a long time," the 27-year-old stated. "The team has qualified for three consecutive FIFA World Cups, and even at the Africa Cup of Nations, we have done well."
No Favourites in This Fixture
Despite the confident talk, Talbi was quick to play down suggestions that Tunisia are the favourites for the upcoming match. He acknowledged Nigeria's strong start to the tournament and promised a competitive battle.
"I don't think that we are the favourite in tomorrow's match because Nigeria did well in their first match," Talbi said. "We are confident and hope to make it a good match." He added that the result would be pivotal in determining who finishes at the top of the group.
This match is a repeat of a round of 16 clash from the 2023 AFCON edition. The history between the sides adds extra spice, with Tunisia defeating Nigeria 1-0 at the 2021 AFCON thanks to a goal from Youssef Msakni.
Super Eagles' Impressive Pedigree
The Nigerian team carries its own formidable history into the game. The Super Eagles have featured in 20 AFCON tournaments, lifting the prestigious trophy three times and finishing as runners-up on five occasions.
Their consistency is notable, having finished in the top three in 13 of their last 15 AFCON appearances, according to data from Al Jazeera. This pedigree sets the stage for a classic continental showdown between two giants of African football.
As the teams finalize their preparations, all eyes will be on Fez to see if Tunisia can back up Talbi's words with another victory over Nigeria, or if the Super Eagles will reassert their dominance and take a giant step towards the knockout stages.
