Wrexham's Okonkwo gets first Super Eagles call-up

Wrexham AFC goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has received his first call-up to the Nigeria national football team, the Super Eagles, for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London. Head coach Eric Chelle announced separate squads for the Unity Cup and international friendlies against Poland and Portugal scheduled for June.

Unity Cup Squad

For the Unity Cup, Chelle retained experienced stars including captain Wilfred Ndidi, Francis Uzoho, Bruno Onyemaechi, Moses Simon, Akor Adams, and Terem Moffi. Nigeria will face Zimbabwe in the semi-final at The Valley on May 26, with the winner advancing to the final against either Jamaica or India.

New faces in the squad include Arthur Okonkwo, who recently switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria. Other debutants are defenders Emmanuel Fernandez and Igoh Ogbu, midfielders Raphael Onyedika, Tochukwu Nnadi, and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, and striker Rafiu Durosinmi.

Several Nigeria Premier Football League players also earned call-ups: Michael Atata, Elias Ochobi, Chibueze Oputa, Obinna Igboke, Aderemi Adeoye, Ayobami Junior, and Tosin Oyedokun.

Friendlies Against Poland and Portugal

For the international friendlies, Chelle recalled established stars including Alex Iwobi, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Calvin Bassey, Frank Onyeka, and Paul Onuachu. The Super Eagles will face Poland in Warsaw on June 3 before traveling to Leiria for a clash against Portugal on June 10.

These matches form part of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria have been drawn in the same AFCON qualifying group with Madagascar, Tanzania, and Guinea-Bissau.
