Abakaliki FC Takes Drastic Action After Opening Match Stalemate
Abakaliki FC has indefinitely suspended its chief coach, Ifeanyi Onyedika, following the team's disappointing 1-1 draw against Calabar Rovers in their Nigeria National League opener on November 16, 2025.
The decisive action was announced immediately after the match by club chairman Senator Obinna Ogba, who expressed frustration with what he described as a consistent pattern of underwhelming performances from the squad.
Management Loses Patience with Coaching Methods
According to Chairman Ogba, the final straw came when Calabar Rovers managed to equalize after Abakaliki FC had taken the lead early in the second half. "I have lost patience with the coach's tactics and motivational methods," Ogba stated emphatically.
The chairman highlighted that despite the team undergoing more than three months of intensive training, including participation in a preparatory tournament in Shagamu where they failed to progress, the results remained unsatisfactory.
Assistant coach Starplus Anista has been appointed as interim head coach with immediate effect, taking over leadership of the team during this critical period.
State Officials Back Suspension Decision
The suspension received strong backing from Ebonyi State government officials. Hon. Richard Idike, Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, expressed complete dissatisfaction with the team's performance and coaching approach.
"I'm not impressed at all," Commissioner Idike remarked. "The chief coach was standing like a stooge on the bench. There was no motivation for the players. With the support the state government is giving, this is not the result we should be getting."
He confirmed that Governor Rt Hon Bldr Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has rolled out support programs aimed at improving the team's prospects this season, making the recent performance particularly unacceptable.
New Interim Coach Pledges Fresh Approach
Newly appointed interim coach Starplus Anista, who described the suspended Onyedika as a father figure, has promised both continuity and a fresh perspective.
Anista assured Ebonyi State fans that the club's primary objective of securing promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League remains unchanged despite the coaching change.
"I pledge continuity of purpose and a fresh approach," Anista said. "Ebonyi State fans should expect the boys to rise and fight for results."
The club management has urged supporters to remain patient while the interim coaching team implements its program and works toward immediate improvement in upcoming fixtures.
