Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has described Nigeria's para athletes as the 'unseen giants' of the nation's sports landscape, emphasizing their consistent global medal achievements despite facing limited recognition domestically.
Advocacy for Parity and Recognition
Olopade, a former president of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation and ex-vice president of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (Africa), has long championed the development of para sports. He made these remarks following the conclusion of the Third National Para Games in Abuja, which showcased over 2,500 athletes competing across 15 sports, underscoring the rising prominence of para sports in Nigeria.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Oluchi Tobe-Chukwu, Olopade articulated that his leadership at the NSC represents a continuation of his advocacy efforts, now with a strengthened focus on policy reforms designed to foster inclusivity. He stated, "For too long, our para athletes have been the unseen giants of Nigerian sports, consistently winning medals globally, but often fighting for basic recognition at home. Having walked this journey with them from the federation level, I know that what they need is not pity, but parity. We are here to ensure they are seen, heard, and rewarded equally."
Key Initiatives and Support Measures
During the National Para Games in Abuja, several significant measures were implemented to support the athletes. These included the timely disbursement of allowances and the alignment of prize categories with those available to able-bodied competitors at national sports festivals. Additionally, Olopade personally contributed approximately N2.2 million to the prize pool, aiming to boost motivation and elevate competition standards.
Feedback from athletes at the event highlighted Olopade's hands-on approach, with many noting his active presence at competition venues and direct engagement with participants. This athlete-centered administration style was widely appreciated, as it demonstrated a commitment to addressing their needs and enhancing their overall experience.
The growing profile of para sports in Nigeria, as evidenced by the scale and success of the National Para Games, reflects a positive shift towards greater recognition and support for these dedicated athletes. Olopade's efforts underscore a broader movement within the NSC to ensure that para athletes receive the parity and visibility they deserve, paving the way for continued excellence on the international stage.
