Eric Chelle Reportedly Sidelining 2 Super Eagles Players from AFCON 2025 Core Squad
Chelle to Shun 2 Players in Super Eagles AFCON 2025 Squad

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has made a significant decision regarding his final squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. Reports indicate he is effectively sidelining two players from his 28-man roster, choosing to work with a core group of 26.

Chelle's Final Squad Selection Strategy

The former Mali coach had initially named a 54-man provisional squad on December 2. He then trimmed it down to the final 28 players by the December 11 deadline set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). However, it appears his match-day planning involves a tighter unit.

According to reports from OwnGoal, Chelle views the duo of Salim Lawal Fago and Usman Mohammed as the 27th and 28th players. They are considered alternates, with the coach concentrating his preparations on the other 26 who have already resumed camp in Cairo.

Preparations and Friendly Match Ahead

The Super Eagles are set to face Egypt in an international friendly match in Cairo on December 16. This game serves as a crucial warm-up ahead of the continental tournament. Chelle will be leading Nigeria in his second consecutive AFCON, having previously coached Mali at the 2023 edition where they reached the quarterfinals.

This tournament presents a major challenge for the 48-year-old tactician. His objective is to guide Nigeria to its fourth AFCON title, ending a drought that has lasted since their last triumph in 2013.

Expert Opinion and Player Context

Nigerian sports journalist Oluwabusayo Olowookere has commented on the coach's approach. He supports Chelle's right to make tough decisions, emphasizing that not every player on the final list can expect to feature prominently.

"I don't believe in the rotation of players during major tournaments," Olowookere stated in an exclusive comment. "If the starting XI is producing the desired results, then they have to maintain the squad."

He provided context on the two affected players, noting that Salim Fago Lawal is a young talent whose time will come, while Usman Mohammed is a senior player in a competitive right-back position.

Interestingly, Lawal recently showcased his potential by scoring for his club, Istra 1961, in a 1-1 draw against HNK Rijeka on December 14. Despite this form, he remains uncapped for the senior national team.

The increased squad size allowance by CAF, now up to 27 players with federations covering the extra costs, gives coaches more flexibility. However, Chelle's reported actions suggest he is prioritizing a cohesive, smaller group as he aims to build a winning team for Morocco 2025.
