AFCON 2025: Shola Ameobi Warns Super Eagles, Names Uganda as Tricky Opponent
Ex-Super Eagle Ameobi Warns Nigeria Against AFCON Complacency

Former Super Eagles striker Shola Ameobi has issued a stern warning to the Nigerian national team, managed by Eric Chelle, against any form of complacency as they gear up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Ameobi's Caution on Uganda Threat

The ex-Newcastle United forward, who represented Nigeria at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, pinpointed Uganda as a potentially tricky opponent for the three-time champions in the group stage. Speaking exclusively to Complete Sports, the 44-year-old analyst, born in Zaria, Kaduna State, emphasized that the Cranes should not be underestimated despite their underdog status on paper.

"Uganda are coming into this tournament with something to prove," Ameobi stated. "They’ve got the discipline, physicality and some hunger about them, and that is a dangerous combination in knockout football."

The Perils of Poor Preparation and Arrogance

Ameobi drew from the tournament's rich history to highlight how favorites have often been humbled. He cited poor preparation and arrogance as key factors that have led to shocking upsets in past editions of the continental showpiece.

"AFCON has a habit of humbling a lot of the favourites," he explained. "I think in many circumstances teams bring too much arrogance or poor preparations, with players coming off long seasons from all around Europe and rest of the world."

He further noted the unique challenges of the tournament, including varying tactical systems and sometimes difficult pitch conditions, which can level the playing field. Ameobi warned against the dangerous mentality of bigger teams believing they can simply "turn it on when we need to," a complacent approach that has led to punishment in the past.

Ugandan Striker Echoes Confidence

Ameobi's warning finds an echo in the camp of the Ugandan national team. Their striker, Melvyn Lorenzen, who plays for Muangthong United in Malaysia and is a former Werder Bremen player, has also sent a message to Nigeria and other Group C opponents.

The 31-year-old forward asserted that the Uganda Cranes, who have historically struggled at the AFCON, will not be pushovers in Morocco. "I think any team that comes won't be comfortable playing us. It's time to prove that again," Lorenzen said via the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).

Nigeria is drawn in Group C for AFCON 2025 alongside Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. The Super Eagles, under coach Eric Chelle, are aiming for a fourth African title.

Ndidi's Captaincy and Social Media Stir

In related Super Eagles news, the team's new captain, Wilfred Ndidi, recently caused a stir on social media following comments made upon the squad's arrival in Fes, Morocco, for the tournament. Ndidi was appointed captain following the international retirement of William Troost-Ekong after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

As the countdown to the tournament continues, the combined warnings from a respected former international and a motivated opponent serve as a crucial reminder for the Super Eagles: in the unpredictable arena of AFCON, nothing can be taken for granted.
