The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has declared that the Super Eagles are fully prepared and determined to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Morocco.
Healing the Pain of World Cup Miss
Gusau stated that lifting the AFCON trophy would serve as a powerful balm for the recent disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He believes a continental triumph would restore pride to millions of Nigerian fans across the globe.
"We have prepared the team with the objective of lifting the trophy," Gusau said. "The World Cup miss still bites, but if we are able to win the Africa Cup of Nations, it will go a long way to assuaging the feelings of our fans at home and in the diaspora."
A Defining Achievement for a Generation
The NFF boss emphasized the significance of this mission for the current squad of players. Securing the title would provide this generation of Super Eagles with a major international achievement to cement their legacy.
"It will also be good for the present generation of Super Eagles, as they will have at least one major triumph to their name," he noted. Nigeria will be chasing a historic fourth AFCON title, having last won in 2013. The team came painfully close in the last edition, suffering a 2-1 defeat to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the final.
NFF's Commitment Amid Economic Challenges
Gusau also highlighted the Federation's unwavering commitment to providing top-tier logistical and welfare support for the national team, despite facing significant economic headwinds.
"It has not been easy, but we have to continue to appreciate and show that we value the contributions of the players and officials at all times," he explained. "They have to travel and lodge in comfort, and that is something we must always find a way to work out despite the challenges that the Federation faces."
In his concluding remarks, the NFF President reaffirmed his total confidence in the technical crew and players to overcome recent setbacks and deliver glory for Nigeria on the continental stage. "I have confidence in the coaches and the players to turn the present gloom around and make Nigeria proud in Morocco," Gusau asserted.
