Nigeria and EU Strengthen Digital Push to Target Global Tech Talent Market
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has emphasized that Nigeria must strategically leverage its burgeoning youth population to maintain competitiveness in a technology-driven global economy. He highlighted that beyond mere access to technology, nations must develop the capacity to effectively adopt and utilize digital innovations to fuel economic growth and national development.
Strategic Response to Global Skills Shortage
Dr. Tijani made these remarks at the 3MTT Partner Network Launch & Showcase event, organized by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) in Lagos. The event formally introduced the 3MTT Partner Network and marked the commencement of the EU–3MTT partnership. He described the Federal Government's Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme as a strategic response to the worldwide shortage of skilled technology professionals.
According to the minister, this initiative is designed to position Nigeria as a major supplier of digital talent while equipping young people with globally relevant skills that can drive shared prosperity. He praised partners such as the EU, MTN, IHS, and Airtel, among others, and called for more collaborations, insisting that the government cannot achieve this goal alone. Diplomats from countries including Finland, Netherlands, Spain, France, and Denmark were in attendance.
Shift Towards Collaborative Governance
Dr. Tijani noted that the programme reflects a broader shift in government thinking, emphasizing collaboration over isolation. He stated that partnerships with development organizations, private sector players, and global institutions have been critical in mobilizing resources, expanding training capacity, and creating pathways for employment opportunities for participants.
EU's Long-Term Commitment to Nigeria's Digital Sector
Massimo De Luca, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, affirmed the union's strong investment in developing Nigeria's digital sector through sustained partnerships and policy-driven initiatives. He emphasized that Nigeria's digital talent is globally competitive and stressed the need for a coordinated approach that nurtures skills organically within a well-aligned ecosystem involving government, private sector, and development partners.
De Luca explained that the EU's engagement extends beyond short-term interventions, describing it as a long-term commitment that includes investments in connectivity, digital public infrastructure, and capacity building. He added that collaboration with member states and European businesses would be crucial to delivering inclusive and sustainable growth, positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global digital landscape.
Transformative Impact on Beneficiaries
One of the programme's beneficiaries, Ismail Adam, shared how the initiative transformed his life from struggling as a teacher to becoming a competitive software developer. He noted that the training opened up income opportunities and enabled him to compete in international digital challenges, where he emerged as a top finalist.
