Nigeria's artificial intelligence sector is expanding at an unprecedented pace, with investments tripling over the past 18 months and new startups emerging in Lagos, Abuja, and other tech hubs. However, this boom rests on a fragile foundation: the country's unreliable electricity supply. According to the World Bank, more than 85 million Nigerians lack access to reliable power, and the national grid has experienced multiple collapses in the past year alone. Without a consistent energy supply, AI models cannot be trained, data centers cannot operate, and the industry's growth could stall before it reaches its potential.
The Energy Bottleneck
Artificial intelligence systems, particularly machine learning models, require massive computing power. Data centers that host these systems run around the clock, consuming substantial electricity. In Nigeria, businesses often depend on diesel generators as backup, but the cost of running generators has skyrocketed following the removal of fuel subsidies. A single training run for a large language model can consume as much energy as hundreds of homes use in a month. For Nigerian AI startups, this creates an impossible financial burden.
Industry experts note that the government's focus on digital transformation has not been matched by investments in power infrastructure. The Electricity Act of 2023 opened the sector to private investment, but the implementation has been slow. Many states have yet to issue licenses for independent power producers, and the national grid still generates less than 5,000 megawatts for a population of over 220 million. As a result, tech companies are forced to choose between relocating to countries with stable power or paying exorbitant energy costs that eat into their profit margins.
Impact on Startups and Investment
The consequences of the power deficit are already visible in the AI ecosystem. A 2025 survey by a local tech association found that 60% of AI startups cited power outages as their biggest operational challenge, surpassing poor internet connectivity and lack of funding. Many companies have had to pause model training during peak hours or invest in expensive solar installations to maintain uptime. This not only delays product launches but also deters foreign investors who perceive the energy risk as too high.
Despite the hurdles, Nigeria has seen a surge in AI adoption across sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and finance. Fintech companies use AI for fraud detection, while agritech firms leverage machine learning to predict crop yields. But these applications are often deployed in the cloud, with locally based startups partnering with overseas data centers to avoid power interruptions. This undermines the goal of building a self-sufficient AI industry and keeps Nigeria dependent on foreign infrastructure.
Government Response and Gaps
Government officials have acknowledged the problem. The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has proposed tax incentives for data center operators that build their own power plants, but these initiatives remain on paper. The Rural Electrification Agency has launched solar projects for tech hubs, yet they cover only a fraction of the demand. Meanwhile, the transmission company continues to struggle with outdated equipment and technical losses, leaving many regions in darkness for hours each day.
In an attempt to address the crisis, the federal government allocated ₦50 billion in the 2026 budget for the expansion of the national grid. However, energy experts argue this amount is insufficient to replace aging infrastructure and attract private investors. They call for a more coordinated strategy that includes decentralised mini-grids, energy storage solutions, and streamlined permitting for renewable energy projects. Without such measures, Nigeria's AI boom will remain an ambition rather than a reality.
Path Forward
To unlock the full potential of AI, Nigeria must treat electricity as a critical component of its digital economy policy. This means not only increasing generation capacity but also ensuring stability and affordability. Public-private partnerships could play a key role, with technology companies investing in power generation in exchange for reliable supply and tax breaks. Educational institutions and research centres should also be prioritised, as they are the birthplace of AI innovation.
The next few years will be decisive. If the government can demonstrate progress on power infrastructure, Nigeria could become Africa's leading AI hub, attracting talent and capital from across the continent. But if the grid remains unreliable, the country risks losing its most promising startups to more energy-secure neighbours like Kenya and South Africa. The clock is ticking, and the power must come on.
