Samsung is set to launch One UI 9, its next-generation software based on Android 17, on July 22, 2026, during the Galaxy Unpacked event in London. The update brings smarter multitasking, stronger privacy protections, upgraded gaming controls, and new AI-powered experiences to eligible Galaxy devices.
One UI 9 will ship pre-installed on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8. A wider rollout for older models is expected around September 2026, though Samsung has not confirmed an exact timeline. Users in Africa, including Nigeria and South Africa, may receive the update several weeks after the initial release in Korea, Europe, and the US.
Key Features of One UI 9
The Quick Panel becomes more customizable, letting users independently adjust brightness, sound, and media controls. The media player can be resized into a compact square layout. Samsung Notes gains a 'Tape Tool' to temporarily cover and reveal note content, plus new pen styles and automatic line-straightening.
Samsung DeX improves productivity with the ability to move app windows between virtual desktops, preview desktops from the Recents menu, and switch workspaces faster. Game Booster now offers real-time monitoring of FPS, CPU, and GPU performance, adjustable screen resolution, and better screenshot options without leaving gameplay.
Privacy and Security Enhancements
Android 17 introduces a blue indicator when an app accesses your location; tapping it reveals which app is tracking you and lets you choose approximate or precise location. Samsung also strengthens protection against harmful apps by warning users about suspicious sideloaded apps, blocking risky installations, and providing a list for review.
Accessibility features include Text Spotlight, which enlarges selected text in a floating window, and a unified TalkBack experience updated via Google Play. The Phone app now displays calls from WhatsApp and Google Meet alongside traditional calls, and shows recent messages and contact information during calls.
AI and Gemini Intelligence
Samsung's Gemini Intelligence features will debut with the new foldable devices, not the beta version. The AI assistant can draft emails, manage schedules, and handle complex requests, though some capabilities may remain exclusive to flagship models.
Eligible Devices and Exclusions
One UI 9 will be available for a broad range of Galaxy smartphones and tablets, but the Galaxy S22 series and Galaxy S21 FE will not receive the update, as they have reached the end of their major Android upgrade cycle with One UI 8.5. Users should check their Software Update settings regularly, as Samsung releases updates in phases by region and carrier.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Samsung ended software updates for the Galaxy A13, A23 LTE, and M33 5G in May 2026, leaving those devices without critical security patches.
