First-Time Abia Lawmaker Ibe Osonwa Launches Mega Empowerment with Farm-Road Graders and Tools
In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming rural communities, Hon. Chief Ibe Okwara Osonwa, a first-time lawmaker representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Constituency in Abia State under the Labour Party, has introduced a novel approach to empowerment. Instead of following the conventional practice of distributing income-generating materials, sponsoring skills acquisition, or providing start-up funds, Osonwa has procured two brand-new road-grading machineries—a grader and a payloader—to open and grade rural farm roads in his constituency.
Empowerment Program Details and Distribution
During his Mega Empowerment and Poverty Alleviation Programme, held at the Ohafia Local Government Area premises, Osonwa distributed these machineries along with various other items to over 500 constituents. The event was attended by the House of Representatives member for Isiala Ngwa North/South Constituency in Abia. The distributed items included bags of rice, mini buses, motorcycles, generators, vulcanizing tools, hairdressing tools, sewing machines, and grinders, among others.
Speaking at the event, Osonwa expressed his happiness in "doing what we should be doing in governance." He emphasized that as good leaders, they must continue to take necessary actions to reduce the burdens on their constituents. Osonwa highlighted his luck in belonging to Abia, which he described as one of the rapidly progressing states in Nigeria, and commended the applicants for seeking empowerment.
Strategic Focus on Rural Development and Agriculture
Osonwa disclosed that his decision to provide the two road-grading machineries was strategic, aimed at accelerating access to rural areas, opening up roads for farming activities, increasing food availability, and generating employment. Under this arrangement, only diesel would be procured to operate the machineries, thereby saving the high costs associated with hiring such equipment from private owners. He urged beneficiaries to apply the provided materials profitably and legitimately, extending the benefits to others in their communities.
Commendations from State and Local Leaders
The State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, represented by his Deputy, Chief Ikechukwu Emetu—an indigene of the constituency—praised the event as a powerful testament to purposeful representation that goes beyond mere empowerment, making leadership more impactful. He commended Osonwa for designing a program that helps people help themselves, contributes to community growth, frees them from poverty, and transitions them from economic dependence to independence, thereby stabilizing family income.
Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, the Chairman/Mayor of the host Ohafia LGA, showered thunderous ovation on Osonwa, describing his empowerment style as both remarkable and the first of its type in the state. Beneficiaries who spoke at the event prayed for divine intervention to bring forth more representatives in the mould of Hon. Osonwa, highlighting the positive impact of his initiatives.
