Women in the coastal communities of Akwa Ibom State received a significant boost to their livelihoods during the Christmas season following a philanthropic gesture from the Senate President.
Boxing Day Empowerment in Ukana
On Boxing Day, December 26, 2025, Senate President Godswill Akpabio distributed a total of 10 outboard engine fishing boats to women and cooperative groups. The event took place at his country home in Ukana, Essien Udim Local Government Area.
The initiative specifically targeted beneficiaries from the Eket Senatorial District and other riverine settlements across Akwa Ibom, where fishing is the primary economic activity. Dr. (Mrs) Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, the Senate President's wife, highlighted that the selection was based on need, not politics.
"These women were chosen because fishing is their lifeline," she stated, praising her husband's commitment to inclusive support across the state.
Specifications and Broader Impact
Dr. Victor Antai, the Executive Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), provided details on the equipment. Each boat was fully kitted with fishing nets, refrigerators, fuel tanks, and modern outboard engines.
The larger boats were fitted with twin 75-horsepower engines, while smaller units had 40-horsepower engines, making them suitable for various fishing needs and enhancing safety on the waterways.
In his address, Senator Akpabio framed the donation as a sustainable tool for business expansion, not a handout. "I can never forget your prayers, your love and your support," he told the women, acknowledging their role as a stabilizing force in the state.
A Transformative Gift for Beneficiaries
The response from the beneficiaries was one of profound gratitude. Mma Nkoyo Isong, who spoke on their behalf, captured the sentiment by saying, "Instead of giving us fish, you have empowered us to fish."
She described the boats as a transformative asset that would promote economic self-reliance among the women. The beneficiaries pledged their continued support for Akpabio and his political platform.
During the ceremony, only a few boats were displayed symbolically, while the names of the individual beneficiaries and cooperative societies were announced publicly.
Akpabio also used the opportunity to commend Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, for focusing on human capital development and grassroots welfare, while urging continued support for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
