The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has issued a public advisory on how to prevent electrical hazards during the rainy season. The company emphasized that increased rainfall and flooding pose significant risks to electrical installations and public safety.
Key Safety Measures
According to a statement by EEDC's Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, customers should unplug all electrical appliances during heavy rains and thunderstorms to avoid damage from power surges. He also advised against touching electrical equipment with wet hands or when standing on wet floors.
Ezeh further warned that residents should avoid areas where power lines have fallen or are hanging low, as these could be live and cause electrocution. He urged the public to report any fallen poles or exposed wires to the nearest EEDC office immediately.
Additional Precautions
The company recommended that households install surge protectors to safeguard sensitive electronics. It also advised against using generators indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, especially during flooding when power outages are common.
EEDC noted that the rainy season often leads to increased cases of electrical accidents, with many resulting from negligence. The company called on communities to cooperate with its officials during maintenance and repair works to ensure safety.
Emergency Contacts
Customers were reminded to keep emergency contact numbers handy and to avoid approaching any electrical infrastructure that appears damaged. The company assured the public that its teams are on standby to respond to emergencies promptly.
EEDC concluded by stating that safety is a shared responsibility and urged everyone to adhere to these guidelines to reduce the risk of electrical hazards during the rainy season.
