British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) has announced a complete transition from diesel to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) across its manufacturing operations, marking a significant step in its climate action agenda. The announcement was made during the 2026 World Environment Day celebrations, which this year is hosted by Azerbaijan under the theme 'Climate Action,' emphasizing global calls for accelerated emissions reduction and sustainable energy transitions.
Operational Strategy Shift
In a statement, BATN emphasized that climate action has become a core component of its operational strategy, moving beyond future ambition to integrated sustainability within its long-term manufacturing and business model. The company noted that environmental responsibility and industrial performance are increasingly interconnected in driving sustainable growth.
Energy Transition Milestone
The complete shift from diesel to CNG represents a major milestone in BATN's energy transition journey. The move has eliminated diesel use entirely in manufacturing processes, significantly reducing carbon intensity while improving energy efficiency and operational resilience.
Renewable Energy Investments
BATN also reported continued investment in renewable energy, including the installation of a 1.4-megawatt solar power system at its Ibadan factory. This facility is described as one of the company's most advanced manufacturing sites, and the solar deployment forms a key component of its broader clean energy strategy.
Waste and Water Stewardship
On environmental management, BATN achieved a 98.64% waste recycling rate since 2024, maintaining a 100% zero-waste-to-landfill status at its Ibadan factory since 2021. These achievements reflect its commitment to circular economy principles and responsible resource use. In water stewardship, BATN's operations have retained full certification under the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Standard since 2022. Investments in water efficiency and recycling technologies have led to a 42% reduction in freshwater withdrawal, surpassing its 35% target ahead of the 2030 deadline.
Digital Innovation for Sustainability
The company highlighted the role of digital innovation in strengthening sustainability performance. Systems such as a Global Manufacturing System, an integrated Enterprise Data Platform, a Utility Monitoring System, and Smart Boiler technology enable real-time monitoring and improved energy optimization.
Leadership Perspective
Hasnain Ishtaq, Operations Director for West and Central Africa (WCA) at BATN, stated that meaningful climate action must be backed by measurable investment and consistent implementation. He emphasized that sustainability has been embedded across all aspects of the company's operations, from renewable energy adoption to circularity and water stewardship initiatives.
