The Enugu State Government has given the green light for the construction of 19,000 housing units spread across two landmark housing projects. The approval, announced on Wednesday, forms part of the state's strategic plan to address the growing housing deficit and stimulate economic development.
Project Details and Locations
According to the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Godwin Udeh, the two projects will be sited in different parts of the state. The first project involves the development of 10,000 housing units on a 500-hectare land in the Nkanu West Local Government Area. The second project will deliver 9,000 homes on a 450-hectare site in the Udi Local Government Area.
Udeh stated that the projects are part of the government's broader vision to provide affordable and quality housing for residents. He emphasized that the homes would cater to low, middle, and high-income earners, ensuring inclusivity.
Partnership and Financing
The projects will be executed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The state government will provide the land and necessary infrastructure, while private developers will handle construction and financing. The commissioner noted that several investors have already expressed interest.
“This is a major step towards making Enugu a model state in housing delivery. We are leveraging private capital to build homes that are affordable and sustainable,” Udeh said.

The housing projects are expected to create thousands of jobs during construction and boost local businesses. Additionally, the development will include schools, health centers, markets, and recreational facilities, creating integrated communities.
Governor Peter Mbah, who approved the projects, said the initiative aligns with his administration's goal of eradicating poverty and improving living standards. “Access to decent housing is a fundamental right. The government has set a timeline of 36 months for the completion of the first phase of both projects. Site clearing and preliminary works are expected to begin within the next two months. The commissioner urged residents to cooperate with contractors during the construction period.
