FG Launches Training for 5,000 Meter Installers Amidst High Demand
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the training program for the first batch of 5,000 meter installers under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI). The initiative has drawn an overwhelming response, with over 220,000 applications received from across the country. This was disclosed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Publicity, Office of the Vice President, Mr. Olusegun Dada, in a statement on Friday.
The training program is a key component of the PPI, which aims to improve electricity distribution and reduce estimated billing by accelerating the installation of prepaid meters. The first batch of trainees will undergo a comprehensive program covering technical installation, safety protocols, and customer service.
Overwhelming Response Highlights Demand for Metering
According to Mr. Dada, the high number of applications—220,000—underscores the public's desire for transparent and efficient metering. He noted that the government is committed to ensuring that all electricity customers are metered, thereby eliminating arbitrary billing. The training is being conducted in collaboration with the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) and other stakeholders.
The trainees are drawn from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, reflecting the nationwide scope of the initiative. Upon completion, they will be deployed to support electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in metering projects.
Training Content and Certification
The curriculum includes modules on meter types, installation techniques, troubleshooting, and compliance with NEMSA standards. Trainees will also receive training on health and safety practices. Upon passing the final assessment, they will be certified as qualified meter installers, eligible for employment by DisCos or private metering firms.
The government plans to train a total of 10,000 installers in the first phase, with the second batch expected to commence later this year. The initiative is part of broader efforts to achieve the target of metering all electricity customers by 2025.

Industry analysts have welcomed the move, noting that a shortage of certified installers has been a bottleneck in metering rollout. The training program is expected to create jobs and accelerate the deployment of meters, reducing revenue losses for DisCos and improving customer satisfaction.
The Presidential Power Initiative, launched in 2020, is a comprehensive plan to upgrade Nigeria's power infrastructure, including generation, transmission, and distribution. The metering component is seen as critical to ending estimated billing, which has been a source of public frustration.
