Agribusiness Firm Unveils Environmental Charter to Strengthen Global Cocoa Export Position
An agribusiness and cocoa processing company, Johnvents Group, has officially launched its environmental charter, a strategic document designed to govern environmental performance across its entire value chain. This move marks a significant shift from policy intent to system-wide implementation, as announced by the Group Managing Director, John Alamu.
Charter Details and Implementation Strategy
According to Alamu, the charter goes beyond a conventional policy document by defining clear priorities in key areas such as resource efficiency, waste management, pollution prevention, and climate action. Each priority is backed by detailed implementation plans, specific timelines, and measurable targets to ensure accountability and progress tracking.
Crucially, the charter is embedded within daily operations rather than isolated within a sustainability function. This integration places execution responsibilities in the hands of teams across production, procurement, and logistics, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship throughout the organization.
Alignment with International Standards and Market Expectations
Alamu emphasized that this operational alignment not only strengthens internal accountability but also positions the group to meet rising international ESG expectations. This is particularly important for accessing the global cocoa export market, where buyers increasingly demand rigorous due diligence on environmental and social governance practices.
In a related development, the group's FMCG business unit, Johnvents Foods, achieved a major milestone by successfully completing the FSSC 22000 Stage 2 audit conducted by Bureau Veritas. This audit evaluated the effectiveness of the facility's food safety management systems, including hazard analysis, operational controls, and compliance procedures.
The outcome confirmed that the systems in place meet international standards, placing the company on the threshold of full certification. This certification is a critical step toward unlocking access to global supply chains where such standards are mandatory, further enhancing the group's competitiveness in international markets.
Upstream and Downstream Enhancements
Simultaneously, the group has intensified efforts within its cocoa sourcing network to strengthen upstream capabilities. Trained staff delivered step-down training sessions for 28 Licensed Buying Agents, focusing on traceability protocols, record-keeping, and regulatory compliance. This initiative aims to ensure that sourcing practices align with the charter's environmental and social goals.
Additionally, field teams completed back-to-back training programmes covering cocoa traceability, child labour monitoring, and cooperative governance. These efforts underscore the group's commitment to holistic sustainability across its operations.
By launching this environmental charter and achieving key certifications, Johnvents Group is strategically positioning itself to capitalize on opportunities in the global cocoa export market while adhering to stringent environmental and safety standards.
