LAWMA Intensifies Call for Proper Waste Disposal to Avert Flooding in Lagos
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has issued a strong appeal to residents, urging them to adopt proper waste disposal practices. This initiative aims to sustain environmental cleanliness and prevent potential flooding, particularly as the rainy season approaches.
Enhanced Operational Activities Ahead of Easter
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, made this statement at the Authority's headquarters. He emphasized that the agency is intensifying operational activities across Lagos State in preparation for the Easter celebrations. According to Gbadegesin, LAWMA has strengthened waste evacuation arrangements throughout the metropolis, with additional monitoring and operational support to ensure prompt service delivery during this festive period.
Increased Waste Generation During Festive Seasons
Gbadegesin noted that festive seasons typically witness a surge in waste generation, making it crucial for both service providers and residents to fulfill their roles in maintaining a clean environment. He urged residents to embrace simple waste reduction habits, such as avoiding unnecessary purchases, reusing materials where possible, and separating recyclable items from general waste.
Strategic Deployment of Personnel and Equipment
To ensure effective waste collection, LAWMA has positioned personnel and equipment at critical locations, including markets, motor parks, and high-traffic commercial areas. Gbadegesin added that the Authority is collaborating closely with licensed Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators to sustain regular domestic waste evacuation and promptly address any service gaps.
Warning Against Indiscriminate Dumping
However, Gbadegesin advised residents to refrain from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels, road medians, and open spaces. He warned that such practices could obstruct the free flow of storm water, exacerbating flooding risks as the rainy season nears. He stressed that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility requiring cooperation between government, service providers, and residents.

Reassuring Lagos residents, Gbadegesin highlighted LAWMA's continued commitment to enhancing service delivery through operational efficiency, infrastructure upgrades, and sustained public enlightenment efforts.
