The Nigerian Navy has uncovered a hidden storage site in the South-South region of the country, recovering 17,000 litres of crude oil. The operation, which took place in the creeks of the Niger Delta, led to the arrest of several suspects believed to be involved in illegal oil bunkering.
Details of the Operation
According to a statement by the Navy, the discovery was made during a routine patrol. The hidden storage facility was cleverly concealed within the mangrove swamps, making it difficult to detect. The 17,000 litres of crude oil were stored in large tanks and drums, ready for illegal sale.
Arrests and Investigation
The Navy has arrested two suspects in connection with the illegal storage site. Investigations are ongoing to identify other members of the syndicate and to determine the source of the crude oil. The suspects are currently in custody and will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
The Navy reiterated its commitment to tackling oil theft and other maritime crimes in the region. It called on members of the public to provide useful information that could help in the fight against economic sabotage.
This operation is part of the Navy's ongoing efforts to curb illegal oil bunkering, which has cost the country billions of naira in lost revenue. The Navy has intensified patrols and surveillance in the Niger Delta region to clamp down on such activities.
