The Destiny Trust (TDT), a non-governmental organization, has inaugurated a new block of classrooms and a digital learning facility for children in Abegede, Idi-Ori, Dongo, and other surrounding riverine communities in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Council Area of Lagos State.
Expanding Access to Education
The project aims to expand educational access for out-of-school children in hard-to-reach areas where challenges such as long distances, poor infrastructure, limited classrooms, teacher shortages, low internet connectivity, and lack of electricity hinder learning.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Abimbola Ojenike, co-founder of TDT, described the initiative as a new chapter for children in the affected communities. He emphasized that while the new school block is significant, the digital learning space represents a broader effort to leverage technology for delivering quality education to remote and underserved locations.
Digital Learning Spaces
Ojenike explained that TDT's digital learning spaces are designed as channels to bring quality learning resources to children in areas with low internet connectivity and no electricity. The daily risks and difficulties faced by the children motivated the organization to create a more dignified, safe, and inspiring school environment.
She further stated that TDT's work in these communities is driven by the belief that education for vulnerable children should not be treated as charity but as a matter of justice and public responsibility.
Council Chairman Commends NGO
Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Council, represented by Education Supervisor Sodiq Agbaje, commended the NGO for its efforts in the Eyin Osa area. He noted that he had previously seen TDT's digital learning space in Arapagi Oloko and found the newly launched facility even more impressive.
Olowa praised The Destiny Trust for its substantial investment in children's education in Lagos and congratulated the benefiting communities. He reaffirmed the council's commitment to education and welcomed continued collaboration with TDT to expand learning access in more communities through digital channels.
